At Least 125 UI, ISU Athletes, Staff Involved In Gambling Investigation

(Undated) -- At least 125 athletes and staff members in the University of Iowa and Iowa State University athletics are involved in a sports wagering investigation.

The University of Iowa says at least 26 current athletes are involved in a sports betting investigation, including in baseball, football, men's basketball, men's track and field, and wrestling. Iowa State University says at least 15 current players across football, wrestling, and track are involved.

Statement from the Board of Regents, State of Iowa:

The Board of Regents is aware of concerns related to online gambling involving individuals associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. The Board of Regents and the universities will fully cooperate with any investigations related to these concerns. We are closely monitoring the situation and have confidence that university administrators at each institution will take all necessary steps to ensure ongoing compliance.

Statement from the University of Iowa:

The University of Iowa and the Department of Athletics are aware of the sports wagering investigation and are fully cooperating. We have alerted the NCAA of the potential violations and we have hired outside counsel to assist in the investigative process. The athletics department provides education on NCAA rules regarding the the prohibition of sports wagering as well as the potential consequences.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is monitoring the investigation. In a statement, the state commission said they take "the integrity of gaming in the state seriously and is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide any additional information when able."

Sports gambling is legal in Iowa, but the NCAA bans players from participating due to conflicts of interest.
