(Iowa City, IA) -- An Iowa City man charged with attempted murder has fled the country.

The Johnson County Attorney’s Office says 19-year-old Ali Younes was under house arrest when he removed his GPS ankle monitor and boarded a flight from Chicago to Jordan.

His parents, Alfred and Lima Younes, have been arrested and charged with aiding and abetting his escape. Alfred Younes was taken into custody in Omaha, where he was attempting to board a flight to Jordan.

Younes is accused of strangling a woman until she passed out on the University of Iowa campus last spring. He’s also accused of stealing the woman’s earrings, which police say they found at his girlfriend’s house.

Younes is also charged with robbery and theft.
