(Undated) -- Just over 100 people are chosen to benefit from a new central Iowa basic income program. UpLift says the participants were randomly chosen to get $500 checks each month for the next two years. The money can be used on food, rent, and other necessities. UpLift received over 6,000 applications from people in Polk, Warren, and Dallas Counties.

Participants must be at least 18-years-old, have at least one dependent, and have a household income at or below 60% of the area median income. The majority of participants identify as White (55%), followed by Black or African American (26%), Asian (4.5%), Latinx (4.5%), and multi-racial or another race (10%). 19% identified as having Hispanic or Latino origin and 81% identified as not being Hispanic or Latino.
