(Geneseo, IL) -- The Geneseo Police Department is installing two license plate reading cameras in town.
Police say the cameras, produced by Flock Safety will be used to help solve and reduce crime. The cameras send a real-time alert to law enforcement when a stolen car or known wanted suspect from a state or national crime database is detected.
They can also be used to help in Amber and Silver Alerts.
In a press release the Genesis PD says other cities using the cameras report five-percent of cases solved are through tips from the automated license plate reading (ALPR) camera systems.
Critics commenting on the PD Facebook page say the new technology is overreach. One calls it Big Brother.
Supporters say the new technology makes them feel safer, especially with I-80 running through Geneseo.
