(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska lawmakers narrowly approve revisions to the "Let Them Grow Act," adding a 12-week abortion ban to the proposal. It also bans gender-transitioning medical care for minors.

"It's a social contagion that is going around that we need to protect out kids from, until they are able to fully assess what it is they are doing," said Senator Kathleen Kauth.

Senator Megan Hunt said the bill's introduction led to a spike in calls to the suicide prevention hotline in Nebraska.

"Shame on you," said Hunt. "Your legacy is filth."

She said the bill, if signed into law, would continue the trend.

Protests outside the chamber could be heard throughout the more than 5 hours of debate, and at one point, interrupted debate with chants from the chamber balcony.

Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly asked security to remove several protestors.

LB 574 was scheduled for its final reading Tuesday, but amendments cannot be added to a bill on its final passage. Lawmakers need to pass the proposal a final time before it can be signed into law.
