Iowa Attorney General Lauds New Drug Overdose Law

(Des Moines, IA) -- A new Iowa law toughens penalties for drug-dealers who distribute drugs that lead to an overdose death.

There's already federal law dealing with drug-overdose death, but this is a first for Iowa.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird says the law is needed, given the large influx of fentanyl into the U.S. and Iowa.

She says "cartels run it across the border and then they quickly break it out into smaller shipments to ship throughout the U.S. Were seeing border size shipments right here in Iowa and they're being distributed."

Criminal justice is a piece of it, but Bird says we also have to make sure we have treatments as well as prevention.

Bird was interviewed by Jeff Angleo on Newsradio 1040 WHO/AM 600 WMT
