(Sarpy Count, NE) -- An 18 month old Sarpy County baby dies after being pinned by an automated mattress.
The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office says Sunday afternoon deputies, along with the La Vista Police Department and Papillion Fire and Rescue, were called to an emergency at a home near 99th and Harrison Street. Investigators say the caller reported that an unresponsive 18-month-old boy required immediate medical assistance.
Once on the scene, the sheriff's office says deputies and officers found the child in critical condition and promptly initiated life-saving measures, including performing CPR. The child was transported to Midlands Hospital for further treatment, but died a short time after arriving at the hospital. Investigators say an autopsy was performed, and the cause of death was determined to be suffocation.
The Sheriff's Office says preliminary findings suggest that the death was caused by the child being pinned between an electric automated mattress and the mattress’ frame. Investigator say at this point, the boy's death does not appear to be intentional or suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.
