(Marshalltown, IA) -- Marshalltown police are calling the deaths of a woman and a man a murder-suicide case. Police found the body of 57-year-old Hemelinda Alcala-de-Villagomez at 607 East Church Street Wednesday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. Police also found 72-year-old Jose Carmen Villagomez-Torez with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Unity Point Hospital in Marshalltown, then transferred to a Des Moines hospital, where he died. Police say the two were married but lived separately.
Investigators say it appears Jose Carmen Villagomez-Torres shot Hermelinda Alcala-deVillagomez and then shot himself. Officers recovered a gun at the scene.
Autopsies will be performed by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.
