(Winterset, IA) -- Winterset Police Chief Ken Burk has died. Burk led the department for the past 20 years. Winterset Mayor Philip Macumber has ordered flags at all city facilities to be lowered to half-staff in Burk's honor.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that the city of Winterset announces the passing of Police Chief Ken Burk. Chief Burk, an esteemed leader and dedicated public servant, passed away on 7/21/2023 after valiantly battling a disease. He was 59 years old.
Throughout his illustrious career in law enforcement, Chief Burk exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and compassion. Serving as the Winterset Police Chief for 20 years, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the bonds between law enforcement and the community, fostering an atmosphere of trust and cooperation.
Chief Burk's impact extended far beyond the department; he was a beacon of hope and a pillar of support for countless individuals in Winterset. His genuine concern for the well-being of residents and officers alike earned him the admiration and respect of all who knew him. Under his leadership, the Winterset Police Department achieved numerous milestones in crime reduction, community engagement, and officer training.

The funeral service to honor Chief Ken Burk's life is pending. Arrangements are being handled at Caldwell Parrish, Winterset Chapel.
A memorial in Chief Burk's honor will be established and details will be released shortly.
