DES MOINES, Iowa -- A former University of Iowa music professor will do federal prison time on drug and child pornography convictions.

The US Justice Department says John Robert Muriello is sentenced to 25 years for conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine which resulted in the death of a victim, and 20 years for possessing child pornography.

The sentences will be served concurrently, and there's no parole in the federal court system.

Prosecutors say in May, 2021 Eric Hojka died in his Iowa City apartment after ingesting methamphetamine. An investigation revealed he got the meth from Muriello, who got the drugs from a supplier in California.

When police conducted a search at Muriello’s Iowa City home they found more meth, as well as a large collection of child pornography.

In addition to the prison time, Muriello is ordered to pay nearly $85,000 in fines, restitution and assessments. He's also forfeiting his Iowa City home.
