Iowa Supreme Court Agrees To Hear Appeal Of Heartbeat Law Injunction

(Des Moines, IA) -- The next legal step surrounding Iowa's new abortion law is about to take place. Iowa Supreme Court has agreed to hear the state's appeal of a Polk County Judge's decision to halt the new law. The Iowa Supreme Court's next term begins in September.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird issued the following statement:

“I am glad that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear our appeal. I look forward to continuing to defend the Heartbeat Law and protect the right to life in court.”

Iowa Supreme Court Order:

After consideration by this court, en banc, the appellants’ application for interlocutory appeal is granted. Further proceedings in the district court are stayed. Iowa R. App. P. 6.104(2). Within 14 days of the date of this order, the appellants shall file and serve the combined certificate pursuant to rules 6.104(3) and 6.804(1)

A Polk County judge granted an injunction blocking the newly signed Fetal Heartbeat Law earlier this month.
