(Des Moines, IA) --A Johnston man hurt in a freak accident in Des Moines the afternoon of August 5th has died. Police say 44-year-old Raymond Koontz was on his motorcycle on I-235 when he was hit by an tire that flew off a pick-up truck. Koontz was knocked off, and had been hospitalized in critical condition. He died Wednesday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Police say Koontz was traveling operating a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle on eastbound I-235, when hit by a tire from a pick-up driven by 40-year-old Jose Flores of Des Moines. Police say the tire came free from the truck and crossed over the median barriers into the eastbound lanes, hitting Koontz.
Flores was able to pull onto the shoulder and stop. Police issued Flores citations for Operation Without A Valid Drivers License and Operation Without Proof Of Insurance.
