(Ames, IA) -- Iowa State University is hosting a number of events to welcome new students to the Ames campus. Thousands of new students moved into residence halls this week. Classes start Monday.

The weekend before the start of the fall semester can keep local law enforcement busy. ISU Department of Public Safety Chief Michael Newton says his department and Ames Police will have extra officers around campus this weekend. He says they'll focus on educating new students, noting they'd rather not cite anyone for misbehavior.

He says last year, about 60-percent of the troublemakers did not have ties to Iowa State.

Total enrollment at Iowa State is around 30,000. University of Iowa enrollment is around 33,00 and University of Northern Iowa enrollment is nearly 12,000.
