(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines City Councilmember Indira Shuemaker has resigned. Shuemaker had not been attending meetings for months. Residents of Ward 1 had been calling for her ouster, saying they felt they were not be properly represented.
Statement from Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie:
On September 6, 2023, Randy Sheumaker hand delivered Councilmember Sheumaker’s resignation letter, effective on August 31, 2023. The resignation letter was received and filed with the City Clerk’s Office. The Mayor and City Council will now take the time provided by statute to determine next steps. Mayor Cownie also stated that, “We wish Ms. Sheumaker the best and appreciate Ms. Sheumaker’s time on the council.”
Sheumaker, a community activist, was elected in November of 2021 and was sworn into office on January 10th, 2022 to represent Ward 1, the city's northwest side.
