(Ames, IA) -- A report finds Iowa has the most structurally deficient bridges in the nation. The Iowa Department of Transportation says the state has more bridges than most states, but fewer drivers compared to other states.

Iowa DOT Engineer Scott Neubauer says nearly all of the structurally deficient bridges are on county roads. He says 26 are on state roads and are to be fixed within the next five years. Neubauer says it would take trillions of dollars to fix the thousands of bridges in Iowa that are structurally deficient. He says county road engineers do what they can, such as reducing weight limits to extend the life of the bridge.
