(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- New sonar technology will help speed up water rescues in Cedar Rapids.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department began testing its new equipment Tuesday while recovering portions of two cars from the Cedar River.
The fire department along with the Johnson County Dive Team participated in the training event.
The recovered vehicles are not involved in an active investigation but helped the drive team with training and testing equipment.
While the fire department did already have sonar technology, the river rescue boat now has side-scanning sonar which will help give clearer underwater images.
According to a Facebook post from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, they hope the new technology will help river and lake searches be more productive, faster response time, and get more accurate reports.
