(Des Moines, IA) -- A Des Moines man is in custody after a four-hour standoff with Polk County Sheriff's deputies, Des Moines police officers, FBI and ATF agents, and a SWAT team.

Polk County Sheriff's Captain Ryan Evans said the incident started around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday on NE 14th Street, when a deputy pulled over 42-year-old Scott Eugene Smith for a traffic violation.

Evans said Smith fled the vehicle, firing at the deputy as he barricaded himself in the Budget Inn Motel.

"When you got somebody that is willing to shoot a gun at a uniformed police officer conducting a traffic stop, that's a really serious situation," said Evans. "Then, you couple that with the fact that we're in a heavily populated area on a very busy street."

Smith was arrested more than four hours later.

No one was hurt.

Smith had an outstanding warrant. He's also charged with attempted murder, felon in possession of a firearm, interference with official acts, several narcotics charges, a traffic offense, and a theft charge.

More charges may be coming.
