Des Moines Man Sentenced in Shooting Death

(Des Moines, IA) -- A Des Moines man accused of killing a woman is headed to prison for at least five years.

Derrick Smith, Jr. entered an Alford plea, meaning that he does not admit guilt, but recognizes that sufficient evidence to convict him likely exists. According to the plea, Smith fired shots on April 3rd of 2020 near Kingman Boulevard and 33rd Street in Des Moines, with one of the bullets fatally hitting a woman as she was driving in the area.

Smith is sentenced to up to 15 years in prison and will become eligible for parole after five years.
