New Illinois Laws That Take Effect January 1st

(Springfield, IL) -- Here are just some of several new laws that go into effect on Monday, January 1st, 2024 in Illinois:

Ban On Certain Semi-Automatic Weapons -- The sale of several semi-automatic weapons are now banned in Illinois. The new law requires existing owners of certain firearms to complete an endorsement affidavit.

Minimum Wage Increase -- The minimum wage in Illinois will rise to $14 per hour January 1st, 2024. It will rise to $15 an hour January 1st, 2025.

Mandatory Paid Leave -- Illinois employers must offer workers paid time off with no explanation needed. Illinois employees will earn one-hour of paid time off for every 40 hour week worked, to a maximum of 40 hours paid time off per 12 month period.

No Zooming And Driving -- Bans videoconference calls in vehicles while driving.

IDOT Mobile App -- Requires IDOT to develop an app that shows current traffic conditions in the state. Estimated cost is almost $3-million.

Automatic Renewal Protection -- Any product or service with an automatic renewal agreement must note the renewal in the the agreement clearly.

No Pet Adoption Fees For Veterans -- Bans animal control facilities from charging veterans for pet adoptions.

Book Censorship Ban -- Libraries must develop a policy banning the censorship of books to receive state grant funding.
