(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Linn County is doing an end-run around the state. The Linn County Board of Supervisors is asking the USDA directly for federal funding to cover their Summer EBT program.

The state of Iowa opted to develop their own program rather than participate in the federal one this year, citing millions in administrative costs.

Linn County estimates 24-thousand residents suffer food insecurity.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack rejected a similar request from Polk County this month saying the USDA can only work with state governments.
