Nebraska Governor Vetoes Needle Program

(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen vetoes a legislative proposal that would have created "Syringe Service Programs" in local jurisdictions.

L-B 307 would have allowed for the distribution of hypodermic needles.

The bill also creates an exception from prosecution for those service providers authorized to distribute the needles.

Supporters say it would reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

The Governor says such programs expose kids to increased dangers, while doing nothing to enhnace community safety.

The proposal was introduced by Omaha State Senator Megan Hunt and was passed by the Legislature last week on a 30 to 7 vote.
