Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa at Very High Fire Risk through Monday

(Valley, NE) -- With highs in the mid to low 70s Monday through Wednesday, much of Eastern Nebraska and parts of Western Iowa will face a very high risk of fire danger. The risk is most acute on Monday, with a red flag warning set to be issued from 1 to 7 PM.

According to meteorologist Suzanne Fortin with the National Weather Service in Valley, the warning comes in response to multiple factors, including warmer than normal temperatures and very low relative humidity during daytime hours. "The vegetation right now is very dried out, so that kind of provides a tinder for any fire that might begin," Fortin said.

The area will see dry conditions until Wednesday, when chances for rain start on Wednesday night. A thunderstorm is possible according to Fortin, though severe weather or snow is not expected.
