(Des Moines, IA) -- The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden held its annual Earth Day fair on Saturday.
Visitors were able to meet various vendors, including from the Rain Campaign, a water conservation effort by Polk County.
"You can start off with a rain barrel, or rain water harvesting," said Cassie Druhl with Polk County Public Works, "that collects rain water from your roof, and you can reuse that in your yard to water plants, wash garden tools, give your dog a bath, fill your bird bath, there's a lot of great uses."
She also suggests soil conservation practices, such as putting compost and more grass seed on your yard, or planting native prairie plants to control soil erosion.
Kim Perez, President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, says the fair is one event contributing to a record number of visitors in recent months.
"Earth Day is an opportunity for us to really live our values. As an organization that is focused on exploring, explaining, and celebrating the world of plants, Earth Day is a day that gets people's attention in a way that we hope to every day of the year," Perez said. She also says this year's organizational goals are focused on maintaining the relationship between people and plants.
Earth Day is on Monday, April 22nd.
