(Cedar County, IA) -- The Cedar County Sheriff is chiming in on the state's new immigration law that makes it a crime for a person to be in Iowa if they've been deported before.

Sheriff Warren Wethington says he'll see if the law is constitutional before enforcing it.

The law would allow local law enforcement to detain and deport those suspected of being in Iowa if they had already been deported.

The Department of Justice is suing the state over the law.

Governor Kim Reynolds and Attorney General Brenna Bird say the law is needed because the federal government isn't enforcing federal immigration law.
