Storms Drench Parts Of Iowa, More Severe Weather Expected

(Kellogg, Iowa) -- Storms dumped heavy rain on many locations in Iowa this (Tuesday) morning, prompting flash flooding and flood warnings.

Flood waters inundated multiple homes, properties and roads in Jasper County, including many in Kellogg. Efforts are underway to gather sandbags to help protect the lift station in Kellogg to protect the community's water system.

The National Weather Service says 3-5 inch rainfalls were common in multiple locations in Iowa overnight and this morning. More severe weather is expected in Iowa. The National Weather Service widespread, severe storms are likely today including the potential for tornadoes (some strong), large hail, & damaging wind gusts in addition to continuing concern about flash flooding.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring.

* WHERE...Portions of central, north central, and northeast Iowa,

including the following counties, in central Iowa, Grundy, Hardin,

Jasper, Marshall, Polk, Poweshiek, Story and Tama. In north

central Iowa, Butler and Franklin. In northeast Iowa, Black Hawk

and Bremer.

* WHEN...Until 1115 PM CDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying

and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 1115 AM CDT, Emergency management reported continued

flooding in the warned area. Flooding is already occurring.

Between 5 and 6 inches of rain have fallen. Additional

showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon which

may lead to renewed or additional flooding.

* WHAT...Minor flooding is forecast.

* WHERE...The Iowa River near Tama Hwy E49, or from Timber Creek

near Le Grand...to Salt Creek near Belle Plaine.

* WHEN...From this afternoon to Tuesday, May 28.

* IMPACTS...At 12.5 feet, Backwater from the Iowa River covers

portions of Business 30 and S Prospect Dr in Toledo.

At 12.8 feet, Water affects portions of C Ave and D Ave from US 30

to the south.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 10:00 AM CDT Tuesday the stage was 11.1 feet.

- Forecast...The river will rise above flood stage late this

afternoon to 12.9 feet this evening. It will then fall below

flood stage late tonight to 11.4 feet tomorrow evening. It

will rise above flood stage again early Friday afternoon to

12.9 feet early Sunday afternoon. It will then fall below

flood stage again Monday evening.

- Flood stage is 12.5 feet.

* WHERE...The East Nishnabotna River near Atlantic, or from

* IMPACTS...At 19.0 feet, Water affects agricultural land.

At 20.5 feet, Water affects US 6.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 10:00 AM CDT Tuesday the stage was 5.3 feet.

- Forecast...The river is expected to rise above flood stage

late this evening to a crest of 20.1 feet tomorrow morning.

It will then fall below flood stage tomorrow morning.

- Flood stage is 19.0 feet.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...A portion of north central Iowa, including the following

counties, Hancock, Kossuth and Winnebago.

* WHEN...Until 645 PM CDT Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying

and flood-prone locations is occurring. Numerous roads remain

closed due to flooding. It will take several hours for all the

water from these storms to work through local drainage systems in

urban areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 1037 AM CDT, emergency management reported ongoing

flooding across the warned area. Between 5 and 7 inches of

rain have fallen.

- Some locations that will experience flooding include...

Algona, Forest City, Britt, Union Slogh, Eagle Lake, West

Bend, Burt, Whittemore, Titonka, Wesley, Leland, Crystal

Lake, Woden, Duncan, Miller, Hayfield, St. Benedict,

Irvington, Sexton and Hutchins.

* WHAT...Minor flooding is forecast.

* WHERE...East Nishnabotna River at Red Oak.

* WHEN...From late tonight to early Friday morning.

* IMPACTS...At 20.0 feet, Lowland flooding begins along the west

bank.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 1:00 PM CDT Tuesday the stage was 7.9 feet...or 10.1 feet

below flood stage.

- Bankfull stage is 18.0 feet.

- Forecast...The river is expected to rise above flood stage

late tonight to a crest of 20.9 feet tomorrow evening. It

will then fall below flood stage late Thursday morning.

- Flood stage is 18.0 feet.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

* WHERE...Portions of the following counties, Harrison,

Pottawattamie, Shelby, Burt, Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas,

Saunders and Washington.

* WHEN...Until 400 PM CDT.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying

and flood-prone locations is occurring. Streams continue to rise

due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. It will take several

hours for all the water from these storms to work through local

drainage systems.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...

- At 1126 AM CDT, emergency management, trained spotters, and

the public reported very heavy rainfall across the warned

area early this morning. Between 3 and 7 inches of rain have

fallen over much of the warned area, with some locations

receiving 8 inches or more.

- Some of the hardest impacted locations include eastern Butler

and western Saunders counties, southeast Dodge county,

northern Douglas and southern Washington county, and

extending into Shelby county.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...

Omaha, northern Council Bluffs, Fremont, Blair, Harlan,

Wahoo, David City, Tekamah, Bennington, Boys Town, Elkhorn,

Carter Lake, Missouri Valley, Valley, Logan, Avoca,

...The National Weather Service in La Crosse WI has issued a Flood

Warning for the following rivers in Iowa...

Turkey River at Spillville affecting Winneshiek County.

Turkey River at Elkader affecting Clayton County.

.A strong low pressure system will lift through Minnesota this

afternoon bringing additional precipitation amounts of 1 to 2

inches. This river basin has already seen 1.5 to 3 inches of

precipitation and the river has begun to rise rapidly at Spillville.

With additional precipitation expected and the river already

responding, will issue a flood warning for Spillville and Elkader at

this time.
