(Des Moines, IA) -- The city of Des Moines is lowering the fine for anyone caught using fireworks within city limits during this years' July 4th celebrations.
Des Moines City Council lowered the fine from $600 to $200.
Sgt. Paul Parizek with the DMPD tells WHO 13 that they thought the steep fine would act as a deterrent, but that hasn't been the case.
The Police Department says they will have a designated team to handle fireworks calls this 4th of July holiday, with an emphasis on public spaces.
They will still be responding to fireworks calls in neighborhoods this year.
Fireworks sightings can be reported to the police department at 515-283-4811.
