(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says tornadoes and floods have caused damage in two-thirds of Iowa's 99 counties so far this year. The state has issued 20 disaster proclamations, three Presidential disaster declarations have been issued as well.

Reynolds says severe weather has damaged at least 5,000 homes, and has destroyed at least 2,000 homes. She notes that number is expected to rise.

The state of Iowa is launching three, short term and long-term housing programs, as well as financial assistance for farmers. The state is also enlisting the help of Iowa Prison Industries Homes for Iowa program to build modular housing. Habitat for Humanity is also involved in the housing recovery effort.

Several members of the governor's cabinet provided updates today (Thursday) on the severe weather response.

*The Iowa National Guard activated 94 soldiers and airmen across the state to help with the flood response, working in a variety of capacities from rescuing flood victims, to removing debris along with DOT crews in Sioux Rapids and Spencer.

*The Iowa DOT sent 81 staffers and dozens of dump trucks to flooded areas, and hauled nearly 3,000 loads of debris, including nearly 15-hundred large appliances. The DOT reports there were 73 closures of roads and bridges. Two bridges remain closed, inspections continue.

*The Iowa Department of Education says multiple school buildings sustained heavy damage during severe weather so far this year, and several districts will be using temporary classrooms when school starts. The DOE says the goal is to begin the school year on schedule if at all possible.

*The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is reminding those impacted by severe weather they may qualify for special programs, including the "D-Snap" supplemental food program and other services. The Department says the state will also make mental health counseling available for disaster survivors.

*The state of Iowa is launching the Disaster Recovery Farm Interest program. This program buys down interest rates by reimbursing interest payments up to $50,000 per household over 12 months on commercial loans farmers will use to repair damage on insured property.
