(Iowa City, IA) -- It's been 12 days since parking rates went up in downtown Iowa City and residents are already upset.

Iowa City resident Shannon Stokes tells Iowa's News Now, "I was never able to find a parking spot around campus, so that parking situation was already horrible and then having to pay more for parking on top of that is just kind of ridiculous. Like, there's no free parking, there's really limited free parking in the city."

On July 1st, the hourly rate in Iowa City parking garages rose to two-dollars an hour, and some metered rates are now 3-dollars an hour.

The city says the funds are needed to make maintenance and upkeep of the city's parking infrastructure pay for itself.
