Iowa's Unemployment Rate Unchanged At 2.8% For Third Straight Month

(Iowa) -- Iowa's unemployment rate for June remains unchanged for the third straight month at 2.8%.

Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend says education and healthcare gained 1,800 jobs in June, construction gained 400 jobs, retail gained 600 jobs and finance gained 300 jobs.

She says the biggest losses were in manufacturing, both in chemical and food industries, with a loss of 1,000 jobs.

Iowa's labor force participation rate is down slightly in June at 66.5% down from 66.7% in May.

Director Townsend says that is generally due to retirements.

She says it is not uncommon to see a lot of retirements in May and June of each year.

The number of unemployed Iowans fell to 46,600 in June, down from 46,900 in May.

Nationally, the U.S. unemployment rate increased from 3.9% in April to 4.1% in June.
