(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- The city of Cedar Rapids has purchased temporary land for parking downtown.

City Council approved the purchase of lots in the 300 block of First Street Southeast at a cost of just over $1-million.

The city will use the lots for parking that will be lost during construction of the new flood wall downtown.

Afterwards, the city will make the land available for development.

The lots have been empty since the buildings that used to be there were torn down after the flood of 2008.
