(West Des Moines, IA) -- A woman's facing charges after police say she stole a West Des Moines Police squad car and led police on a high-speed chase. Police say the chase started near South 60th Street and Village View Drive with a mental health call around 2 a.m. The woman was able to get into the squad car and drive off. The car's location was tracked using GPS.
The woman drove to Mills Civic Parkway, then north on I-35 and then east on I80/35.
Police say the pursuit reached a top speed of about 125 miles per hour before the suspect hit stop sticks near 86th street. They continued and turned south on Highway 65. The suspect came to rest near 8th Street and Highway 65 in Altoona.
Officers took the woman into custody and transported her a hospital for evaluation and treatment of the original mental health concern.
One additional police car sustained minor damage. No other vehicles were damaged. No serious physical injuries were sustained.
West Des Moines Police were assisted by Iowa State Patrol, Urbandale Police, Altoona Police and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
