(Des Moines, IA) -- A Des Moines Police officer shot this (Tuesday) morning on the city's south side, is hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Officers were called to Army Post Road on the city's south side this morning after a report of a no-contact order violation. The 45-year-old male suspect led police on a short chase, that ended when he lost control and drove off the road in the 43-hundred block of East Army Post Road.

Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parezik says the suspect got out of his vehicle and at first appeared to point a gun at himself, but then aimed at officers, who fired, hitting and killing the suspect.

Police say it appears one officer was hit by a bullet fired by another officer. Officers were wearing protective vests, but police say it appears the bullet hit the officer in a gap. The injured officer 37 years old and has been on the force for four years. The other officer is 23 and has been on the force for 10 months.

Parezik says the injured officer is doing well, and is expected to fully recover.

The Des Moines Police Department and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct an investigation.
