Iowa Shoppers Will Save Millions Friday & Saturday

(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa's annual sales tax-free weekend is this Friday and Saturday, August 2nd and 3rd. Purchases for shoes and clothing under $100 are exempt from state sales tax. The exemption also applies to online purchases.

The Iowa Department of Revenue estimates each year during sales tax-free days, Iowa shoppers save about $5.5 million.

There are a number of taxable items aside from clothing and shoes under $100.

In general, clothing does not include the following:

  • watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, sporting equipment, skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates, and any special clothing or footwear designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear.
