(Rock Island, IL) -- Not everyone is happy about the state of Illinois eliminating the 1-percent grocery tax. The hundreds of millions generated annually from the tax goes to local governments.
Rock Island Mayor Mike Thoms tells WQAD News 8 that the city receives around a million dollars annually from the tax that Rock Island uses for fire and police salaries and pensions, and road improvements.
The state is allowing municipalities the option to keep the grocery tax in place locally. That's a decision local governments need to make before October of next year.
The Illinois grocery tax ends January 1st, 2026.
