Ames Enacts Hefty Fines For Nuisance Parties

(Ames, IA) -- The City of Ames is increasing penalties for nuisance party violations. The first offense is $650. The penalty is $855 for each repeat offense. The policy is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday, August 23rd thru Sunday, August 25th at 4 a.m. That's the weekend before classes start at Iowa State University.

Those who park illegally that same weekend will be at risk of having their vehicle towed immediately. Bright green signs will be posted in neighborhoods near campus.

According to Ames Municipal Code 17.30, a Nuisance Party is defined as a social gathering where any of the following occurs:

Public intoxication or unlawful alcohol-related activities

Outdoor urination/defecation

Littering or destruction of property

Unlawful pedestrian/vehicular traffic or obstruction

Unlawful loud noise, fighting, or any conduct that threatens people or property

A party or social gathering that is or becomes a public nuisance shall cease and disperse immediately upon the order of any officer of the Ames Police Department; and, all persons not domiciled at the site of such social gathering or party shall leave the premises immediately. Any person who fails or refuses to obey and abide by such order shall be guilty of a violation of this section

Typically, a first offense for a nuisance party is $100, second offense is typically $200.
