(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Students at Cedar Rapids Schools with chronic attendance issues could face legal trouble under a new policy.

Chris Gibson, Director of Student Services for CR Schools tells Iowa's News Now that "we will have to by law let the county attorney know that the student has missed 20% or more of the school year, but they won’t take that case unless the family has had no communication, and is not really working to help the child get to school."

Gibson says the new policy is a result of a new state law that aims to crackdown on a significant drop in attendance at schools statewide since the COVID-19 pandemic.
