Video Of Interview With Mom Who Hid Child's Body In Garage Released

(Rock Island, IL) -- Newly released body-cam footage acquired by WQAD News 8 shows a tense police interview with Sushi Staples, and the search of her garage for the body of her son, 10 year-old Zion Staples.

In the video, obtained in a Freedom of Information request, the voices of two unidentified Rock Island Police detectives can be heard speaking with Sushi Staples in July of last year. Later in the video, investigators discover Zion's body in the garage of the home.

The Rock Island County Coroner said the boy likely died of an accidental gunshot wound in December 2022.

Staples pleaded guilty to a charge of child endangerment in January, and was sentenced to two years in prison. She was released last month on parole.
