(Cedar Rapids, IA) -- Cedar Rapids city leaders broke ground on a new apartment complex in NewBo yesterday.

The mayor says the Loftus Apartments on 3rd Street SE will fulfill a civic promise.

"In terms of of living living spaces, it's really key to living up to our 15-minute walkable, bike-able neighborhood promise that we're working toward in our city's climate action plan," says Cedar Rapids mayor Tiffany O'Donnell.

The 36-million dollar, five-story, mixed-use project will have 180 market-rate housing units, and commercial space on the former site of abandoned buildings. Completion is expected in November of next year.
