(Des Moines, IA) -- The city of Des Moines has launched a program to help reduce the number of 911 calls the city receives.

The Des Moines Fire Department says as part of the Mobile Integrated Healthcare program which was launched in April, trained paramedics will make in-home visits, routine stops at local shelters, provide support for those with mental health issues, substance abuse, chronic conditions and more.

The fire department says they responded to 33,351 calls for service last year, with nearly 1,450 of them coming from the same 82 individuals.
