A 16-year-old has been taken into custody after a loaded handgun was found in a backpack at Des Moines Roosevelt High School.

Police were called to the school around 9:30 on Monday morning, after a loaded 9mm handgun was safely removed from a student's backpack.

The preliminary investigation says there was no indication of threats being made to another student or staff.

The 16-year-old is now facing a felony charge of carrying a firearm on school grounds, and possession of dangerous weapons and loaded firearms by a minor, a serious misdemeanor.

Des Moines Police continue to investigate.
