(Omaha, NE) -- Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert has vetoed the budget resolution 2024-0977, saying she's not against hiring additional firefighters.
"I am opposed to the intent of the resolution and disregard for the potential likely consequences," said Stothert in a letter released this (Thursday) afternoon.
Stothert says she's committed to hiring 18 more firefighters in the 2026 budget if the city does not receive the federal SAFER grant. She says a resolution that calls for the city to allocate $1.2 million for that purpose is not responsible.
The Omaha City Council approved the $531 million 2025 budget earlier this week.
