(Johnson County, IA) -- The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is considering closing the county jail and housing inmates elsewhere.

That's one of the alternatives to the plan presented in July to build an 80-million dollar facility with a 140-bed jail.

Several supervisors have concerns with the size of the proposed new jail.

The consultant who developed the plan is also being asked to determine a cost for repairing the roof, replacing the HVAC, and stablilizing the brick exterior of the existing 43 year-old jail.

The Johnson County Sheriff says the existing jail is overcrowded and unsafe for staff and inmates.
