(Muscatine, IA) -- A man convicted of a murder near Muscatine in 1980 has been denied a petition for post-conviction relief.

William Beeman has been in prison for 44 years, convicted of murdering a 22 year-old woman in Wildcat Den State Park west of the Quad Cities.

Attorneys for Beeman argue the state acted in bad faith by not examining DNA evidence they say could have proved him innocent.

The judge noted that the DNA testing was not common practice until the late 80's.

Beeman is serving a life sentence.
