(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa Architectural Foundation is highlighting the recent remodeling project at Drake University's Meredith Hall with a gala and open house on October 12th.

Laura Porter, with the Iowa Architectural Foundation says the event will highlight the mid-century modern building, one of two in Des Moines designed by German immigrant and notable architect, Mies van der Rohe.

"We are partnering with the Drake School of Journalism, which is housed in Meredith Hall," Porter said, "to celebrate the work that's been done to revitalize the building."

Porter says the building was constructed in 1965.

"Drake University has very renowned campus architecture that was inspired by the modernist movement during the 50s and 60s and Meredith Hall is one example of that," Porter said. She says part of the display will also include other items designed by van der Rohe. "A piece of this is a furniture display with unique van der Rohe designs,"

She says recent updates to the building include technology improvements that are more compatible with modern learning styles and lesson plans, but that the changes should not interfere with the building's design or appearance.

The gala is being held on location October 12th at Meredith Hall on Drake University's campus in Des Moines. Tickets are forty dollars and can be purchased on Eventbrite. Porter says proceeds go towards ongoing restoration efforts.

Van der Rohe also designed the Catholic Pastor Center of the Diocese of Southwest Iowa (formerly the Home Federal Savings and Loan Association of Des Moines Building), located in downtown Des Moines.
