Iowa Disaster Victims Face New Threat

(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa's disaster victims recovering from tornadoes and floods this year, may have a new threat: scams. The Iowa Insurance Division is warning about home repair scams and FEMA impersonation scams. Consumer Advocate Sonya Sellmeyer says there have been reports of FEMA impersonators asking disaster survivors for information and claiming they'll help seek assistance. She reminds homeowners to ask for ID and notes if you get a letter indicating you've applied for assistance, when you haven't call the FEMA fraud hotline.

The Iowa Insurance Division also warns of what are commonly known as "storm chasers" -itinerant storm repair outfits who provide an estimate, make promises, accept payment, then perform shoddy or no work at all.
