(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa State Patrol and Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit teamed up today in a joint traffic enforcement operation, leading to more than 75 citations.

With a focus on excessive speeding on I-235 and Hwy 5 in Des Moines, more than 50 cars were stopped for excessive speeding with the support from the ISP's Air Wing.

Des Moines Police say the highest speed recorded this morning was a driver going 93 mph in a 60 mph zone on I-235.

Police say shortly before 11:00 a.m., an ISP Trooper attempted to make a traffic stop for excessive speeding when 44-year-old Damarious Carey of Des Moines sped away.

Police say they disengaged their pursuit when Carey drove through residential neighborhoods at a high-rate of speed, with the ISP's airplane continuing to monitor Carey's location.

Carey then fled on foot after he was blocked by DMPD officers as he attempted to drive down a dead-end alley in the 200 Block of Euclid Avenue, leading to a brief struggle with officers when he was caught.

He was taken into custody after being tasered.

Carey is facing several charges, including OWI and illegal gun possession.
