(Moline, IL) -- An Illinois Senator says federal dollars are available for lead water line replacement so homeowners don't have to pay out of pocket.

In an interview with WQAD News 8, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth says Illinois municipalities need to pass ordinances to get the process moving forward or they'll miss out on federal funding. Duckworth says over 7-billion in federal funds are available to cover the cost.

Illinois leads the nation with 23% of the lead pipes still in use.

Rock Island estimates a cost of $10,000 per home to replace lead pipes.
