Des Moines man arrested after explosion damages car in "targeted attack"

A Des Moines man is in custody after police say he targeted someone's car with a improvised explosive device.

Des Moines Police originally responded to a call for a vehicle fire early Tuesday morning just southeast of downtown.

An investigation with assistance from the ATF revealed evidence consistent with an explosion.

Police later arrested 33-year old Daniel Hellmers during a traffic stop in Ankeny. He's in the Polk County Jail facing several charges. Police say he and the owner of the car know each other, and evidence indicates he targeted the vehicle. .

Des Moines Police also say an additional arrest is expected in this case.
