(Iowa City, IA) -- Iowa City estimates that residents have saved a million dollars in bus fares since they introduced their free-fare transit program last year, and they want the free ride to continue.
Iowa City Director of Transportation Services Darian Nagle-Gamm speaking with Iowa's News Now says they're trying to find a steady funding stream so they can continue to fund fare-free Iowa City past the end of the pilot next summer.
She says ridership has increased 43% under the program.
The city used American Rescue Act funds to launch the two-year pilot program in August of 2023.
