(Lincoln, NE) -- The next Chief Justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court was introduced on Friday. Governor Jim Pillen is appointing current Nebraska Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Funke to replace Mike Heavican, who is retiring. Funke has served on the Nebraska Supreme Court since 2016 when he was appointed by then-Governor Pete Ricketts.
“I want to thank the fifteen hundred people that work in the judicial branch,” Funke remarked during the announcement ceremony. “They are the heart and soul of what we do, why we do it, and how we do it. We have people in trial court services, judges, staff, probation officers, and public guardians, all dedicated to serving the public. They work tirelessly and with creativity,” he added. He concluded his speech by saying, “Any past successes or future achievements are due to the hard work of these people.”
Funke's replacement on the court will be announced later.
